How long until crack withdrawal starts?

Crack is a form of cocaine that is smoked and is popular among drug users who want to get high immediately. Crack smokers begin to feel euphoric immediately after inhaling crack. But crack is highly addictive and withdrawal can begin shortly after effects wear off. This is often why crack abusers will do anything to get another hit.

Physical withdrawal symptoms from crack addiction may not last more than a week. However, there are many psychological issues that arise due to crack use. Psychological withdrawal symptoms of crack persist for many after you stop taking the drug. Symptoms of crack withdrawal can include paranoia, impulsivity, terror of impending death, hyper sexuality, bronchitis, extreme weight loss, lung cancer, spitting up black phlegm, brain seizures, heart attack and many more dangerous effects.

Crack withdrawal timeline

24 – 72 hours

Within twenty four to seventy two hours you may start to experience paranoia and tactile hallucinations like skin crawling. Many people report hearing sirens or people talking. This will make you extremely alert to the point of being paranoid and suspicious of everyone and everything around you.

Week 1

During the first week after you begin withdrawal from crack, you may attempt to convince yourself that you are cured and that you no longer need treatment. This is the time where most people let their guard down. It is during this period that fatigue has worn off and you start feeling more healthy. However, cravings persist and can lead to relapse. Crack withdrawal symptoms can typically last from 1-3 weeks and may also consist of apathy, irritability, disorientation, hunger, fatigue, and long periods of sleep.

Week 2

After two weeks of crack withdrawal, you may experience acute drug hunger and depression. The brain will have produced enough dopamine for you to want to smoke more crack, but not enough to affect your emotions and restore you to a happier state of mind. Alternating low and high drug craving, low to high anxiety, paranoia, and dysphoria (intense dissatifaction with life), are common during this time.

Weeks 3-4

After three to four weeks you can expect frequent changes in moods and your body will be chemically off balance without you being conscious aware of it. Psychological craving for crack persists and can be accompanied by anxiety and/or depression.

How long do crack withdrawal symptoms last?

Crack withdrawal symptoms can last up to six months or longer if you were a heavy user. Symptoms last longer for heavy users. The amount of crack you used determines the severity and length of the withdrawal period that you will experience. Seeking medical attention for untreated mental health disorders and to get your brain back in balance is recommended. Psychiatrists and addiction specialists can help, as can cocaine rehab centers and/or support groups.

Crack withdrawal: how long?

How long crack withdrawal lasts depends on how heavy of a user you were and how frequently you smoked crack. If you were a heavy user, crack withdrawal can last for months or longer. People who have used crack for long periods of time may also experience PAWS, or post acute withdrawal syndrome. PAWS occurs when the brain has been damaged to the point where it will take an extended amount of time to repair and get back to normal. Many drug abusers relapse during this time because they cannot handle the stress of PAWS. Symptoms of PAWS will appear usually three to six months after cessation of crack.

  4. I met my partner over 4 years ago when he was in rehab. After we were together about 2 months, he started using crack sporadically, and is still doing the same thing. It is like he is okay, then his brain or mind clicks and he wants to use. Every time he does, he says he is sorry, but does nothing to get back into treatment or anything. He recently lost a job of 3 years for stealing. I have no idea if this was true or not. Is there any way he means he wants to stop or is this just to put me off until the next time? His children do not even speak to him and have him blocked. I am losing hope and am very frustrated with this process. I also am an over 31 year recovering alcoholic/marijuana user. I never used crack thank God and never plan on it. I know by virtue of just being here, I am enabling. I have tried to be supportive, but my patience is wearing thin. My son graduates with a Master’s Degree in two weeks and we have to travel 300 miles to that. I am trying to get through that and then see, but I am ready to call it quits. Thank you for your help.

  5. Lol@Wanda
I know right…if only the negative sensation were remembered.
Seems like you can only recall the good part once you come down completely.

  6. I haven’t done crack for the past 9 months I was strong and I really feel as if I’m not out the woods just yet. I want to embark on a 3 month journey where I also quit cigarettes to get the remnants of crack out of my lungs. I’m wondering with strict diet and exercise do you know about how long it will take to get the crack out my lungs. And also do you have any tips or coping mechanisms you could give me to help out?

  8. My partner is a recovering addict from crack and heroin. He has since turned to drink and got very aggressive and paranoid. It is becoming unbearable to be in this relationship. We have our good days but then when a bad day comes it’s like living in hell! We have a 1 year old daughter too this really isn’t healthy for any of us especially my princess! Every single day it is guaranteed I’ll be accused of cheating in a round about way whether it’s dropping hints or outright calling me every name under the sun! I’m having to hide my relationship with him otherwise half of my family will disown me because of how badly he treated me and his other 2 children whilst he was on drugs! He has been clean for around 4 months now and I am really proud of him I just don’t know how much more of this mental abuse I can take. I already had severe anxiety and depression when I met him. Since meeting him I am on the maximum dose of anti depressants and am having to be reviewed for a psychiatrist. Someone please give me some advice I really don’t know what to do! I love him with all my heart but I’m at breaking point.

  9. Hi Rose, I am fighting the battle with getting off it at the moment and although it has only been a short time clean I just want to let you now it is so hard!!! And when that little urge comes into your head then there is nothing else that matters which is so bad and hard to say but it is the truth. All I can suggest is stick by him and show that you are supporting him but not going to stick up with it for ever. Hope all goes well

  11. @Liz.. he’s using again. @Wanda, I was told that it happens because crack is to psychologically addicting.

  12. Why do I want to smoke crack even if I’m not craving it. Also Why can’t I recall all the bad things it causes.. It’s like my mind goes blank and I can only focus in that.

  13. Hi. Are gastrointestinal problems(diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, gas, etc.) withdrawal symptom for crack? My bf has been using for a year daily for alteast 7 months. He would spend sometines 8 hours or more in the bathroom blaming stomach problems. Now he has been clean for i think 5 weeks. The last 4 days he has been “having stomach issues” again. Has been in the bathroom for around 40 hours in the past 4 days.
I can hear the flushing toilet and sometimes hear him vomiting, i k ow he is sometimes actually having trouble but i am unsure as whether itvis the withdrawal or relapse.

  14. Hi,

  16. This is horrible. I know folks who have done crack but I never realized how bad it is or what they were really going through
I’m glad this information is available so people realize what they’re getting into when it’s offered to them.
    Peace and Love

  17. Hi, I have been using crack for about a month now and have been trying to stop for the last 2 weeks. I can stop for a couple of days but get drawn back into it after about day 3-4.
I have been using about half an ounce a week which by reading these posts is a lot!!! Now I am worried I’m never going to be able to get off it.

  18. hello, there is no word about withdrawal after few times taking , inhaling crack? are withdrawal the same intensity, does it last less? thanks

  19. what happen remember the first hit. the smell the buss and the ringing in the ear. than the chase begins. Its been years i still haven ‘t caught up to it. After the last hit the look the crawl begins. It does’t stop until you lose it. i mean everything. That’s what happen. You need help.

  20. I know a friend that is using aderal and using crack cocaine and has already had a heart attack 10 yrs ago. Double by pass..and a TIA mini stroke about 3 months ago…are they in danger w this combo of drug abuse???

  21. My husband used crack years ago but has started 5mths ago and I thought he was so I’ll he has now told me that he can just stop we are totally broke now so is it that he just has no more money

  22. Hi a few questions? Is it safer to make your own with just the coke and baking soda? Also I don’t do it that often so I don’t feel like I’m addicted but when I use I do go crazy where I scared myself and I felt like I wanted to throw up and my head started to hurt. I did have a good bp of 124/96 heart 97 the fastest it got was 122. Also I broke out in a rash that is really itchy, thing red pin needles like bumps.

  23. I used crack for a month and a half. I been sober for 3 weeks. I am trying to figure out if i am hearing things. It seems that i am hearing my boyfriend having sex. He is away from me during these times. When he is with me i cant hear the sounds at all but as soon as he is gone, the sounds come back. I will text him and say “hey i keep hearing the sounds of someone having sex”. He thinks i am hearing things. I don’t hear them any other time when i am not home, and when i call him he does not answer, and when i hear the sounds i text him but oftentimes he does not respond and lately he hardly ever contacts me while he is away. Is the sound of him having sex my imagination or did he bug my room? I am only used for that short time.

  24. I had a seizure from overdosing on crack. This was Super Bowl Sunday. I haven’t touched it since but it has made me extremely paranoid and left me with really bad headaches. I am on suboxone and want to come off of them because now I don’t want to touch anything at all. Will I have another seizure if I stop the suboxone? I need to add that I used crack for three weeks. Never before that. So I’m not really sure if the headaches are from withdrawal- don’t think so because I’m not craving it, because I hit my head HARD when I passed out and had a seizure, or if it’s from being so paranoid/will I have another seizure. I know it’s corny but I am officially scared straight.

  25. I’ve stopped smoking crack for about a month now, n I still am ichy around my face, n back. will the iching ever go away?

  26. I first commented on October 25, 2015. At that time I was clean from crack for a little over a month. I now have 2 years and 4 months clean from the drug. Since my question was never acknowledged or answered, I figured I would share for those who were desperate just like I was at that time to understand the withdrawal process from crack. I had tried many times in 8 years to get off of the drug. I attended 5 inpatient treatments, almost 20 outpatient treatments and the immediate withdrawal was always just fatigue which only lasted from a week to two weeks. It was the psychological withdrawal that got me every time. I would be so depressed and full of anxiety, fear and anguish. It wasn’t until I was education about Post Acute Withdrawal also referred to as PAWS, the process where the brain repairs itself causing many of the symptoms that I had that ultimately changed my life. It funny how addiction blogs, rehabs and treatment centers barely address the issue but it is probably one of the biggest causes of relapse since you feel like you will never be sane again. It literally took me 15 months to feel normal again but since I knew that if I kept going, it would eventually lift, I was prepared my last time and as the months went by the phases of depression got shorter and shorter and the intensity wasn’t as bad. As recall the worst of it was the first 8 months and I went to many 12 step meetings, made friends with other people who had long term sobriety to surround myself with and when the depression hit, I didn’t allow myself to feel like it would never go away because I was educated and knew that it would. My last period of depression ended in January of 2017 and I have not had another episode of Post Acute Withdrawal. I hope this helps someone because I was a slave to crack and it ran me and my life and now I am free.

    1. Hi Jerry. When you detoxing from crack, you may use benzodiazepines to ease withdrawals. Also, it is Baclofen, a GABA receptor antagonist that inhibits the release of several neurotransmitters such as dopamine, glutamate, and noradrenaline. It diminishes the reward effect or positive sensations associated with stimulant use. I suggest that you consult with a doctor before taking anything. Also, download our free e-book to learn more about managing withdrawal here:

  44. I’ve been clean for over four years, with no desire of ever going back. The cheating, lying, loss of family, friends, is hardly worth the life in a mental gutter. Sure there were good times while using, but fighting to sleep for 1/2 hour before work, drinking a beer to come down, isn’t me. I’ve paid my dues to that freak show and left, somewhat intact. No need to wish you well, just THINK!

  46. Good Day

My husband is in rehab at present for crack cocaine addiction.
He has a history of addiction, firstly alcohol and weed, then Crystal Meth and Wonga which he left and then moved on to the crack cocaine.
He smoked Crystal Meth and Wonga for approx 6 months before being admitted into hospital to detox, when he got out he started smoking crack cocaine,
He has been smoking crack for around 6 months 5-6 days a week.
He will be in rehab around 28 days.

What I would like to know (I realise it is different for every person) is how long do you think the withdrawal symptoms will last? And how long do you think it will take for his brain to start releasing its own dopamine.

As a side note, he was diagnosed as Bi-Polar 2 in October last year as well.

I just have no idea what to do or how to handle this. What do I do when he gets home, how will be be. I know this is hard to believe but I was totally unaware of the drug problem as he worked night shift and I worked during the day so we lived past each other. I only found out about the Crystal Meth in the Beginning of October 2016 and that is when he went for help. I thought everything was fine after that and only found out a month ago that he was now smoking crack cocaine.

I have never known or come into contact with someone who was a drug addict (well not that I know of) and really do not know how to handle this and him when he gets out.

    Please can you advise me.

    Thank you

  48. My cousin start smoking crack 10 years ago, 4 months ago he used to do it everyday weekend and stay out smoking all night, his wife forgive him so many times. Now he was clean since October of last year but last week his wife notice something was wrong with him and she had the feeling he was smoking after work but he away come home and give her all his job check. Last night hey got into a argument and he left all night and he hast try to contact her at all. You think all this months he stop smoking is gonna damage his brain now that he start doing it again, would he keep doing it like he used in the pass? Or would he be very sorry and stop again like he did 4 months ago?

    1. Hi Melbourne. Cocaine withdrawal may cause irregular menstrual periods. I suggest that you speak with your gynecologist.

  49. I have been clean from crack for 10 months I have shave my armpit hair seen Sep getting drug tested with it still sure that I have been used since I was a heavy user is still come clean after 10 months and my si getting drug tested with it still sure that I have been used since I was a heavy user is still come clean after 10 months and my safe

  50. This is my first day without crack… I’m taking lorazepam but they don’t seem to do shit! I’m fuckin starving and my skin itches… Is this normal? Thx for your time 🙂

  51. I don’t think this is a normal withdrawal symptom but if she was using it very heavily maybe it’s possible. I would take her to the doctor. I used this horrible drug for 10 years and could stop at times, but could never stay stopped. I would get so severely depressed but this time, I hung on and got medical help for the depression so I could get through the worst of it and now at 15 months clean, I am not on any medication and am actively involved. From what I hear over and over again at my meeting (I attend AA and CA), most people replaced because they stopped attending meetings and lost conscious contact with a power greater…so for me I am done with the content torture that crack use brings during and after using it. The post acute withdrawyl is so psychological it’s horrendous that I have so many friends who are uninsured and can’t get the mental help they need when they stop.

  52. My mother fell on some hard times and went back to smoking crack, I believe though she may have overdosed. What we’re all worried about is she may have had a stroke. My question is, as far as withdrawals go, it’s been 48 hours now and she can’t form a complete sentence, she has moments of difficulty breathing – like she’s struggling – she stares off also and has moments like she’s trying to remember where she is. Is this common withdrawal symptoms?

  53. I’ve been smoking crack for about 8 months non stop . maybe 1-7 days I would quit. Now I’m having chest pains an scarred . but I can’t stop nor pay for treatment plz help me

  54. i have been smoking it for the last 6 months mot heaps but some i was out going and loved people now i stay at home i yryed to give it up today third day but its been so hard i cant stop crying and thinking about really sad things and just cry and cry and feel really sick i want to be me again what can i do? i want to be happy again

    1. Hi Denise. Why don’t you call the number you see on the website to get in touch with our trusted treatment consultants?

  55. I’m 53yrs old I’ve been using cocaine since I was 20yrs old I need help I been to several programs but my sobriety only last no more than a few months after treatment I wanna stop but don’t know how!?

  56. Hi, I have a friend (52 yrs old) who has been using for many years. He has been clean for 2 years and the last 4 months has used really heavy. He has reached out to me for help. I had him at my place for 3 days and dropped him off at home while I went to work for a few hours. When I returned to pick him up he said he wanted to be at his home (which is in very rough/dirty state) for a couple more hours and he would come to my house. Big mistake! I brought him to my place this past Tuesday evening and he has been here ever since. He made a call for rehab yesterday and a call to his counsellor toady. The problem is he says he wants to go home tomorrow, which we both know will lead him to taking off and finding and using again. What words can I say to him to keep him with me until rehab is set up for him again?

  57. i have used crack cocaine about 10times,,7time out of the 8times was just a hit…and the other 3times i used less than 1gram of crack…please i feel body aches,i dont wanna leave this life no more,am not addicted but i want to stpop the habit..please help me

Hi, I’ve used since my Dad died when I was 20 and I was devastated and at that time I just got into a partnership with someone at that time and I grew up knowing that crack kills and this is your brain on drugs anyway was in the back of a jeep in the garage at an spy. complex and they were passing a pie back and forth and they let me try it and I guess I did it wrong or there was nothing in it and I asked what it was they said crack, I went ballistic and Beat him my Dad had just passed and I was ripped apart, but anyway I have been smoking ever since 1989, I started with a primo and it was on for 27 years I left my body and begged God to help me, I was s waiter and I got to the point that I was homeless most of the gtrt27 years, make a long story short, Something came over me and I quit cold Turkey on the 1st of January 2016, I just quit without that withdrawal and since the first of this year, I relapsed on time in Sept and only did a dime and I wanted more after that, but I forced myself to refrain and from the first til Sept I loved to have money saved and since then I haven’t used again and threw the the glass away and ever since then I haven’t had a crack dream or the desire anymore and feel like I was gone for 27years and I feel lost like I was in another world or abducted cause I am now crying and wondering what happened too me, I feel like I came back and feel like I was when I left reality when my Dad died and still thing it’s not real and all my feelings are flooding back and I’m always apologizing for things that I say do or act and my b-day was last Tuesday and I got drunk and smoked a lot of cigarettes and I turn 48 this year and my Dad died when he was 48 and since I woke up on the 26th, and from then to now on November 3rd I haven’t touched another cigarette or alcohol 9 days now I can smell better and no withdrawals or desire to use again and s catch myself briefly think about it when I’m doing something that I used to do when I was using and my mind says to me that’s a disgusting habit and it goes away, thanks for letting me share and my question is how and what should I do with my life now. I feel like I won’t be able to for anything now, I’m lost and don’t know how to live and fit in, I have a psychologist and don’t know what I should be on to balance my brain. What should I do or ask her for my bipolar and manic depression and borderline personality? Please help I never want to use again and my mind is off it’s rocker thank you:) Thanks every one for listening and stay safe, SOBER:)

  59. I have been with boyfriend for 12 years we have a 10 year old son together.. he has smoked crack on and off our whole relationship. Recently he disappeared for 2 days on a binge. I thought he had been clean at least a year but investigating after this disappearance I’ve discovered he just got good at hiding and lying to me. He seems to be able to go months clean then goes and uses. He makes very good money and will blow a paycheck. I guess my question is how can I help him stay clean, what should I be doing?? He’s a good man that i now realize has a disease. I’ve never done any type of drug other than smoking pot in my teen years so I don’t understand the pull and choice to jeapordize losing a family..

    1. Hi Millie. After almost two decades of feeding your addiction, it’s best to check into a professional detox and treatment facility. You will need extensive psychological and emotional support. But, you can make it!

You can start by searching for licensed rehab facilities in your area:

  66. I’ve now been off crack since Jan. 1st of this year after 27 horrible years, I feel like a different person, like I came out of a coma, I sincerely have no thoughts or desires of using again, but I feel lost, my family is in shambles and I’ve been blunt and have no compassion for my family for not helping me or being there for me for 27 years and now all I do is bitch them all out and being cold hearted blunt by the way they treated me, it’s complicated and I have no friends or family and don’t know how to live anymore, what should I do, I feel as though, like I said, I woke up and 27 years of my life are gone, please help, thank you

  67. My boyfriend was a heavy user he has accused me of cheating with every man in this planet… He has been clean for a month but in his head he is right and I’m wrong I also tried to poison him,so not true but in his head I did.. My question is will he ever stop thinking this or its set in his brain for good?

  68. Imagine spending £300/£1000 a day on crack and heroin . People using him like mad . He who doesn’t know the game of crack and tries it once may get away with a slap on the wrist but try it again and you will regret that decision a while down the line. I would never lure someone Into taking crack not even an enemy. The only thing and I mean the only thing you will be interested in is crack . It doesn’t see colour of a person nor gender hell even beauty. It chains you up like a prisoner and controls you . Every aspect of your life is crack and you get fed up of it and try quitting then you realise you can’t stop crack so you give in and have a heavy session . You cry later in bed and think of life so you try again and again and again until you realise your not in control no more and keep on smoking . All your dollars in your pocket now turn into pennies in your pocket. You try and try but the mind games take over your brain.

  70. Hi. I smoked crack heavily on and off for 7 years. I have been sober for 11 months. I still crave the drug. I am always tired and don’t have any energy. Will I ever feel good physically ever again?

  71. My husband has been smoking crack heavily but not sure how long for. At least 2-3 years I think. He doesn’t think he has a problem so won’t get help. What can I do?

  72. My husband is addicted to crack and wants to quit but finally realizes he has an addiction and I need to know how I can help him and what I need to do? He has promised me he will go to N/A every week but what else can I do to help him at home?

  73. Hi, I was wondering if you can help me, if this blog is still active. I have a complete disablement from the chest down and with my massive increase of time, I started smoking crack through boredom and only had the mental addiction whilst smoking. I had smoked crack for 18 months 2-3 sometimes more 3-4 days a week, I have not touched for about 2 months which I found mentally easy to stop. It does still come into my mind on occasion but I stay clear of the idea. The problem lies with my muscles in my abdomen and my legs, being disabled I already had spasticity which was managed by medication. The spasticity in my muscles now is absolutely ridiculous. I have tried doubling my spasm medication just a few times to see if it makes any difference and absolutely not. I Was prescribed (oxicontin 20+40+60mg 12 hour release/ oxynorm 10+20mg and pregabalin 225mg) which I stopped dead 8-9 months ago. I had a function a few weeks ago and took a pregabalin and an oxinorm 10mg 1 because I do suffer from back pain sitting in my chair and to my amazement my muscles was a lot calmer whilst in my chair. The opiet makes my stomach feel like absolute shit and I did not feel an effect of the pregabalin. I had another engagement a week later, I stayed away from the oxynorm and just took the pregabalin hoping to have the same relaxed spasticity. I had the desired effect on my spasticity but after a few hours of taking the tablet it kicked me like a horse, I have also had that actual experience. I am honestly not sure what these spasms are related but does look like the pregabalin. I honestly don’t enjoy feeling like an absolute mong and cannot take those pills to calm my muscles with those effects. I have the will power to stop anything dead, I have done copious amounts of searches for someone with disabilities. I have always come up short and I now need some advice if you are able to help me.

  74. @jimmy at least you’re an honest soul, and you care for your animals! You sound like a lovely person who has much to live for but enjoys indulgences and wants someone to really love you, I hope you can get the love and help you need. I personally believe every addiction holds a function and we just need to find and understand that function. Personally I have used cocaine and smoked crack regularly for the last 3 months and yes I have an addiction even if it a minor problem in comparison with people who have sold everything for the drug etc! To me it;s function was taking away an addiction to my ex and her actions to which I was totally obsessed with! (TO THE POINT OF WANTING TO PUT MYSELF IN MENTAL HOSPITAL) I found cocaine took away my obsession with her and became my new best mate!!! I know it’s bad but it helped me in that way…. I just have to now learn to get off the shit lol and let go of all addiction… Least it better than padded cell I guess lmao…. Anyway bud, I hope you sort it out, I have 3 cats I love to bits, two of them were strays I took on coz I hated seeing them eat off the street, I still feed them well…

I see my anger and mood swings and what im doing to my loved ones. Some days I can smoke 60-80$, and some more than $150.00. I don’t know what to do. I want to be me again, but who is me??

  89. I am back smoking crack after 4 years of being clean. I smoked crack when I was in my mid to late 30s. Smoked for 9 months and quit. I quit on my own no classes no 12 step no drugs to help me get clean I quit and never looked back. Until a few months ago I just couldn’t shake the cravings of smoking crack. I don’t know what started it either but I am back smoking again. Anyone have any tips on why after 4 years of being clean did the cravings hit me so dam hard. And should I quit on my own again or should I go to those gay ass classes and 12 step program. I can quit on my own I just don’t know if that is why I am back smoking again or was it something in my life that has shaken me and I am running from reality. Any ideas. Anyone want to talk

  90. I am desperate to stop crack and heroin. I have methodone

Can I just stop crack safety after using every day for over a year? Thank you for taking your time to read this and I will be so grateful to have honest and truthful reply. Ty

  91. Hi. I have a little over a week clean from crack, and before September I had a little over 4 years clean. A good friend of mine passed and I believe a combination of that and trying tonstay clean on my own without a support network contributed to my terrible choice. I changed my phone number and deleted all my dealers numbers. It is hard to quit when dealers are calling and texting multiple times a day. I guess my issue is the mental urges I still get are really strong. I try to do other things until they pass. I have a job, insurance and people in my life who love me but don’t have any idea that I struggle with this addiction. Do meetings really help? Sometimes I feel really alone and that I cant talk to my family or bf about the challenges. I stayed clean on my own for 4 years and even when I used I was good at covering it. I am a binge user who is clean for a few weeks and then goes out and spends 300-600 in one night. I don’t like the paranoid feeling that comes with using and it is getting worse each time I binge. Plus the crash I feel days after are really bad. I don’t want my family, employer and friends to know that I am a binge user crackhead. I want to stay stopped for good this time. Do meetings and treatment really help?

    1. Hi, Trish. There are many people who are living proof that treatments, support groups, and meeting helped them to fight and beat addiction. 92. I am helping an ex partner come of crack! When he stops using will his aunti-depressant drugs help with his moods with the cravings for drugs, he’s only been 24hours with no crack but we’ve have been to seek help at the hospital

  93. Thank you for this post. I am struggling very bad with this crack addiction. It’s crazy that I am even addicted to crack. Opiates are my drug of choice. I always HATED the feeling you get from crack ut that has changed radically. I had extended clean time from opiates, 7 years, and 6 years. Both times I relapsed on crack. This last night was October 2014. I was using every day and within 2 weeks I had relapsed on dope as well. I got on methadone b/c those DT’s aint no joke. I was clean for 3 months off everything only to relapse last October. It is a year later, Im still on methadone and havent touch opiates at all but my crack addiction is out of control. I thought dope was bad but the crack shit is a million times worse (in my opinion and Im sure I’ll get feedback saying this statement isnt true but it definitely is for me. No matter how hard I try, I can only string together a few days then relapse. Its crazy b/c I’ll wake up in the morning completely dedicated to staying off crack and by 1pm that same day, I’ll be smoking. I wont even realize that that crack “switch” has been turned on. I f**king hate this addiction. I have 3 counselors, go to groups (not NA, thats another topic all together) see my therapist weekly, journal, and be 100% completely honest with my boyfriend, who by the way has never touched any drug in his life and boy has he ever see it up close with me….I hate what I do but cant find the strength to quit. I have had it and I dont know where to turn anymore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

  94. Well back again husband is now using don’t no what found out he at drug dealers but he say he didn’t go to get anything just to talk lies lies and more lies I had home when we married a asked him to leave he say this is his home he not leaving. Can’t live like this any more I am not sucidal But depressed, anxiety stressed have been married for 17 year how can I get him out of house?

  95. After doing crack every two to three weeks during the withdrawal can u get real bad migraine headaches an become real snappy after not using for two to three weeks or do withdraw start right after an only last for a few days do the user hav any control over their withdraws can they be dangerous to u an themselves

  96. This article is bs. I quit 7 years ago and it was easy. No paranoia no hallucinations nothing. The key is this when you quit and you’re craving realize that craving feeling is never going to go away and you’re going to have to live with it. Keep busy and know that is the price you pay for messing with it in the first place. After a few days you crave it less and less.
Stay away from whoever you did it with or move if you can, and delete their numbers.
After a few weeks you’re back to normal 100% and don’t crave it anymore at all.
I’d never mess with that stuff again it’s too time consuming and dangerous.

  97. My husband has used hyros, diazpam,, Crack sometimes for years also acholic. He said hydro not wokIng,then start taking subboxon. Now say he quit been 2 -3 weeks now getting depressed . Tell me do ineed to be afraid?

  98. Hi, I am now 6 days clean and plan to try my hardest to stop as I attend regular NA meetings now. I am having big issues trying to get a good night’s sleep now that I’m cleaning up I was wondering if this is normal and how long will it last for

    1. Hi Kristina. Yes, it’s all normal. And, congratulations on moving forward in your recovery. As you can read in the article, withdrawal duration as well as intensity is different for everyone based on several factors. Crack withdrawal symptoms can typically last from 1-3 weeks and may also consist of apathy, irritability, disorientation, hunger, and fatigue.

  99. My daughter’s father has been smoking crack on and off for 18 years, he exibits the signs of psychopathic behaviors. He is constantly using people to get his substance, he is only able to keep a job for short periods of time. He is a bartender and has been fired repeatedly for “overcharging” “drawers being short” he has a criminal history which is linked to stealing for drugs. He has only remained clean during periods of being locked up. He claims he is “clean” but multiple people have confirmed that he has still been smoking at least once a week he also uses Marijuana and excessive alcohol. I have cut off all communication with him to try and protect myself and our daughter and he has threatened to take me to court because at this point he has no rights to our 4 year old and I am trying to protect her as he has already taken her to but crack when she was 9 months old and I was at work. He has not had her alone since that day but how do I keep her safe? He is smart enough to stay clean at least for a short time if he does open the case. He is 36 and is seeing a 53 yr old women well at least that is his main “girlfriend” as he always has multiple “friends” at any given time. He recently smoked crack with her 34 yr old son and his girlfriend and I am terrified of what may happen to my daughter if she is ever with him alone. I am a single mom of 3 and do not have the finances to get an attorney but I need advice. He also has an extensive criminal back ground, including 3 felonies, domestic violence charges and multiple other offenses. Am I doing the right thing by cutting off communication with him and how do I protect my daughter if the case is opened by him? Please help

  100. Linda, did you went to the police? I surely hope you did, because that kind of person that did this to you doens’t deserve to be on the streets.

  101. Been taking crack on and off for 10 years. I’m finding it impossible to stop. I came off methadone after 7 years of the stuff but crack became bigger part of my life. I suffer with mental illness so coming down is awful so try to stay high, its awful…feel so alone and thoughts of suicide are so strong at times. I have key workers but they are just a blur in my life as my habbit is too overwhelming to hear a word from anyone. Only when I’m high do I acknowledge how serious this is…I’m losing the fight. Coming off heroin and meth was hard but this is something else…what the hell do I do

  102. i rented a room from a man back in july 2015. i do not use drugs. but he was using opiates (crack) i didn’t know it. he was also giving me a date rape drug. then beating me and raping me. when i wasn’t aware of what was happening. my eyes have been constricted for two weeks now.. when will they return back to normal and should i get help. also where should i get help from. i am on ssi. i am unable to pay for rehab.

  103. I want to stop i know I can’t on my own tried and still smoking I smoke every day. Is there a guide line to advise how one begins to quit and where to find help with out the world knowing your addicted.

    1. Hello wishful thinking. The safest way to stop taking crack is under medical surveillance. It’s considered the safest way, because symptomatic treatments can help you to decrease the chances of relapse. The emotional support can also help increases your chances of success. Every time you want to quit, consult a medical professional before commencing and follow their suggestions. Once crack will be out of your system, the recovery process continues. It tales a long time to address the psychological and emotional issues that led you to crack. Therapy which addresses past trauma, ways of thinking, or beliefs about yourself can be incredibly helpful. You can seek individual therapy, group therapy, or family therapy for this. You can also look into support groups such as 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery, or Rational Recovery in order to benefit from peer support.

  104. I was using for years and had 85 days clean before I relapsed. The post acute was so bad with extreme fatigue and depression that I used again for 6 weeks very heavily. I now have 40 days clean and the extreme fatigue is back with major mood swings. Any idea how long it will last?

  105. my girlfriend is addicted to crack she smokes it every other day what can I do it all she wants but she has no medical coverage what can I do to help her

  106. I was a heavy crack user and been honest I only had withdrawn for a week maybe did get some depression and extreme hunger but other wise wasn’tto bad

  107. Hello Kacy,
I just finished reading your comments and my heart goes out to you. I know how badly it hurts to watch someone you care about struggle with any addiction but especially with a crack cocaine addiction. I am an addict. I struggled with a heroine addiction for a year before gaining control over it in 2001. I was clean until 2007 when I relapsed on crack cocaine. I was baffled by this since my addiction had always been opiates. I think I felt that crack would be “safe” because it wasnt my drug of choice. After smoking for 19 days straight, no eating, sleeping and very little liquids I found myself in Dauphin County Prison for retail theft. I got out after 3 weeks and stayed clean until August 2014 when I relapsed again on crack. At first it was only once a week, maybe every two weeks. Then it became 2-3 times a week, then every other day, and for the last 2 months it has been every day. I am honest with my boyfriend about my struggles and he is trying to help but he feels helpless to “fix” me. He has never dealt with addiction in any form, not with himself or anyone he is close with and it hurts me so much to see what I am putting him through. I try to hard to stay clean, every morning waking up completely sure that this will be the day I quit smoking and by noon or one o’clock, I have a crack pipe in my mouth. I dont know what happens when that “switch flips in my brain” but when it happens, nothing else matters beside getting high. I hate myself for it and I am disgusted with my behavior but that still isnt even to make me stop. I dont have any answers but what I do know is that your friend really appreciates your support even though you may not see it or he/she doesnt act like it. None of us want to be addicts. You will never find ANYONE who said “when I grow up I want to be a crackhead/junkie” We hate doing this and it makes no sense why we cant stop but trust me, WE WANT TO….You cant do anything for your friend until he wants to make the change himself. Just be there…thats all you can do but I must warn you (as I warn my boyfriend too) love him from a distance and protect yourself. We take hostages in our addiction, usually the people closest to us. We dont mean to hurt you. We do love you even though it doesnt seem like it, we just dont know how to stop or change. I am trying…..Just a few words of encouragement from someone who struggles every day and it SUX trust me…..

  108. Hi,
A really close friend of minds uses from time to time. I really want to help him but every time he gets depressed he feels the only way to cope is to start during drugs. I really want to help him get delivered; but unfortunately he’s just not ready to leave that life behind. He goes to rehab stays clean for 30 days go get high be gone for about 3 days and he doesn’t contact no one from his family. Please help me explain this evil disease?!?!

  109. Hi…my bf of three years has used crack on and off. I have never used any drugs. I don’t understand addiction. He has used on and off since I’ve known him. He will go sometimes three months without using then he will go on a binge. It started getting worse last February. He was “slipping” almost weekly until it came to a head in May when he was coming down from a binge. He got very angry and hit me then smashed in my front door. Needless to say I called the police and he was arrested. He was out of my house and he was using quite frequently during that time. I told him I would leave him and never look back if he didn’t get clean. The last time he used was July 1 and he is going to counselling. He has moved back in with me. Is there any hope of him kicking this habit for good or am I kidding myself thinking that he will not ever slip again…

  110. Been usin 7 year everyday or every other day but I quite for a month 2 week and 2 day how long my withdrawal symptoms last for

    1. Hello Crystal. I believe that by now your acute withdrawal effect have subsided. Now that detox is done, your organism needs time to learn how to function without the drug and recover from the long-term use. There will be episodes of PAWS for a longer time now, but you can get passed them. Join a support and therapy group. Sharing your journey with people who have the same goal – to stay drug free, will motivate you and help you with the psychological cravings and triggers. Good luck to you!

  111. It is Craig again. Well it has been 3 months and I am still clean from crack and Ty. Just thought I would let you know. Taking it day by day. Its a conscious decision everyday to stay clean.

  112. I used crack for about 2months about 100 to 150 doller bags a day and have been not useing for 3 days and.have been horrible. Was wondering if u. Have an idea of how long till im not sick withdawling

  113. I was a heavy crack user for over a year. I used almost everyday especially the last few months i was smoking about $100 every other day. at the end of may I moved out of state away from everyone i know and all my bad habits. I am dealing with the cravings and depression and such by myself and doing ok. my problem/question is….around mid june i started having a terrible cough and it just keeps getting worse. no medications will help. i have only within the last week started actually coughing small amounts of dark matter up. is it possible this cough is fro the drug use and is there any end in sight????

  114. Iv stopped smoking crack 2months ago I went trough stages of using every day then once week and just stopped completely I also had been a benzo addict and stopped taking them to and cut my methadone dose in half iv been HIV positive for over 10 years my status is undectable iv been on antiviral for six year maybe little bit less iv just realised how badly my body has been affected , my family tell me I imagine a lot of things that are not there I so body concious it affects my every day life will this stop over time or is it something i need to accept

  115. I trained as a pastor, before all this, and I specialised in counselling and I went to rehab about 6 years ago. Even though I went to rehab purely to get a few clean days under my belt and re-nourish my body as I only weighed 54kgs at the time of admittance (I am 6″ tall and when I left school I weighed 80kgs), and I had started going blind from using to much crack and my liver and kidneys had started to shut down. At rehab I learnt wonderful tools to use to aid my recovery and I am putting them in practise today. I have recently started going back to church. I live in a very small coastal town which is a minimum of 200km of from any major center, there are no programs here for recovering addict except AA and the psychologists here don’t have a clue how to deal with someone here like me. I was doing well initially, detox was a breeze compared to how I feel now. I read up today about PAWS and a lot of the symptoms mentioned are what I am experiencing, memory loss, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, thoughts about just using because it seems easier than feeling like this, mood swings and anger and frustration. I am determined to stay clean for good, but hell, I feel like I am in hell.

    1. Hi Craig. PAWS are really a hell, but they come and go in periods. At least now you will know what’s happening when it happens. Those are all results of the disrupted and changed chemical balance in our organism. When experiencing the PAWS try to find yourself a strong support system that will keep you on the right track and ease the process.

  116. I have been a drug addict for 23 years, I first used marijuana, lsd, mdma and then moved on to cocaine. I did cocaine for 8 years on average 8 grams a day, I then moved onto crack which I did eveyday for 9 years averaging a quater moon a day, sometimes half a moon (South African size description for crack) I then moved onto using ty white (heroine) using a tenth to two tenths of a gram a day and crack for roughly the last year. I died from a shot of heroine exactly five weeks ago, luckily my girlfriend, who is a long term heroine user, knew what to do and did CPR and brought me back to life. I tapered off my usage and two weeks later did cold turkey. Today I am 3 weeks and 1 day clean from herione and crack, however I am feeling worse now than ever. Intially I used 8mg Suboxone for 14 days. I stopped using them about a week ago. My doctor has prescribed a short term presciption of 10mg Valium and .25mg of Zanor to help me deal with my depression and general feeling of discontentment. What do you think of this?

    1. Hi Craig. Your doctor is definitely following the recommended guidelines for helping someone medically during withdrawal. Have you discussed any other aspects of recovery? Are you going to counseling or psychotherapy?

  117. Everytime I call one of these crisis hotlines all I get is private facilities that only care about what insurance I have! I want help and um reaching out for it but it seems hopeless. I dont know wat to do!

    1. Hi Calvin. All medical facilities have expenses, that your health insurance will help cover. The point is to set up a treatment plan that fits your needs best, and that won’t leave you in debt. That’s why treatment programs need this kind of info – to set up a payment plan that you can afford. When dealing with addiction it’s one of the last things on your mind, but it is important for your life in recovery.

  118. This is so much bullshit lol.. I have been a heroin and crack addict for years, and one thing I can categorically tell you is that withdrawals from Crack do not exist! I once spent 12 months smoking Crack Cocaine everyday, obviously there was days where I couldn’t get any money, but pretty much. On those day where I couldn’t get any money, I wasn’t ill lol and when I finally stopped, because I moved away, there was no withdrawals, only mental cravings. Believe me I know what withdrawals feel like because I have been a heroin addict too.., It just so happened that at that time I wasn’t using heroin, only crack, and believe me, there is no withdrawals. Every single person I know that is also an addict will agree too. It’s almost offensive hearing people complain about withdrawals because its obviously just a placebo… they do not exist!!!!
Physical dependence on crack? I dont care what science you show me, I have experienced it myself! Of course it is possible to experience phsycological issues like hallucinations but argghhh! Physical withdrawals? Its actually offensive… Crack is the most addictive drug I have ever taken, and it continues to give me problems, but if i want to stop, the only problem I will have is mental cravings… and thats the same for everyone. The power of the mind if obviously extremely strong!

  119. I only use twice a month. My kids father got me hooked on crack. I want to get off but I don’t know how and I don’t have support. What can I do

    1. Hi Kellie. Quitting crack isn’t the easiest thing you’ll do, but it is very possible. You will need professional medical help, though. I’d advise you to seek your doctor’s advise and then start your search for a detox clinic or a treatment facility near your area that fits your payment possibilities, health insurance, needed treatment etc., here: and here:
Don’t forget that after the treatment program is done, you still need to stay committed to your recovery, go to counseling meetings or group therapy sessions. That way you will raise your chances of staying sober long-term. Good luck to you, Kellie!

  120. hi my name is Tony I’ve been smoking crack since I was about 21 years old I’m 47 now and I am so sick of using I used to use daily when I first started ….that’s when I used to sell ityou got to the point where I couldn’t even sell it anymore I was too busy using….then it came true vintage ale wants in and out of rehab so I don’t know how many times I stop for a while 6 months 8 months 6 months 5 months back and forth just to pick up again….now I’m at the point for the last 2 years I do or just about every two weeks

    1. Hello Cynthia. Every withdrawal is different, but is rarely life-threatening. The duration and severity of the withdrawal symptoms depend on amount of use, duration (over time) of use, frequency of use, level of crack cocaine dependency, your general health, level of hydration, etc. Another determining factor is how psychologically ready you are to quit using. To search for rehabs in your area and select payment options that wont cost you ‘an arm and a leg’ click on the following treatment locators: or

  121. Ive been clean from crack for 26 months n still see things. I use for 26 years on n off, when I used I did it every day continually n I still hellucinate. Any idea how long will I see things?

  122. Hi KG. Protracted withdrawal symptoms from crack cocaine can be experienced for 6 months and up to 2 years since completely quitting the drug. How long will the symptoms last and how severe the protracted withdrawal will be depends upon type, amount, and frequency of use. Low impact exercise and a good nutrioton program can help him with cravings, as well as counselling sessions or group meetings.

  123. I have never used this drug but my boyfriend has in his past. Can you describe what cravings are for those that quit using but still have these at times. How long will these continue??
Anything on cravings would be appreciated.
    Thank you

  124. Hi Marcus. Your friend is lucky to have you! Now, first of all, I’d like you to explore the options for treatment for people who don’t have any health insurance. 125. I have a friend that is a long time crack cocaine user she wants to stop but can’t. based on what I’ve been reading it sounds like she is going to need long term treatment in a treatment facility she is physically and psychologically dependent on crack cocaine. I need to get her into a treatment facility but she does not have insurance. Can you recommend an inpatient facility in Houston texas that will help her.

  126. Hello David. Fatigue is definitely a symptom of cocaine withdrawal. I’d suggest that you check in with a doctor for a full medical exam and for referral for psychological help; you don’t need to quit crack on your own, but could benefit from a support group or a community of people who have already successfully been off drugs for a while.

  127. 128. I am in the same situation as Riki. My husbannd smoked every day for two months. He’s been clean since the beginning of August. He sleeps through the night but is talking in his sleep every night. He never did that before. Is this PAWS?

  129. My boyfriend was a crack smoker before I might him and was still using up to 5 months after we started dating he promised to stop for me and he did but now it has been 7 months clean for him but I am worried he might be showing signs of PAWS- My question is if he was smoking it once a week for 2 months and once a month for 3 months would he be showing sign of PAWS

  132. Im trying to trust my husband. He has been off crack for three months. The other day he fell asleep on the couch and talked jibberish in his sleep. Later after actualy going to bed he could not get an errction and talked all night in his sleep. When we woke up he still could not get an errection. In fact his penis was the smallest ive ever seen it. Do you think Im being paranoid now?

  133. Hi Dennis. You can call the treatment center and speak to a doctor or a nurse and get their opinion on whether you should talk to her or not. I believe they will put the two of you on the line, since support from the closest is very important in recovery.

  134. I have a friend that went to a treatment center two weeks ago to get help with her crack problem. The first week she had a very good attitude and I can tell the she is feeling more depressed and upset as time goes on. Would it be better if I just left her alone or should I call her to give her some support at the treatment center.

  135. Hi my question is. My girlfriend smoked what I think is crack she said crystle, I’m in israel now Sobieski what it is but she’s not not it for 15 hours or so and she has no apitaite for food is that common ??

  136. I have been clean for about 13 years and relapsed for about 3 months long. At first I was not using daily. Only about 2 to 3 times a week . In the last 2 weeks it was daily, about $60 to $100 a day. I am clean now for 8 days. I do get bad mood swings and feel a lot of anger. I know this is because of my crack usage. I just wonder do I fall in the 3 to 4 week period or am I going to be one of those that have mood swings for months? I hate I did what I did but fortunately I do know what life s like without crack so I know I can do this because I want to live more than I want to die. I just wanted an idea how much longer my loved ones have to put up with my irrational behavior and when I start to feel better. Thank you for your time and what you all do for people like me.

  137. Hi DMV. Crack withdrawal can last for about a month or so, the fist 2-3 day being the worst. But the withdrawal symptoms can last up to six months or longer if you were a heavy user. You can ease the withdrawal symptoms by Joining Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous, walking or cycling, and concentrating on eating a healthy diet, psychotherapy, social interactions with friends and family. Before you quit, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. Doctors can help you by prescribing some medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, or even refer you to a detox clinic or addiction treatment center in your area.

  138. I was introduced to a guy I started hanging out with and I suffer form extreme depression issues. Have been using large amounts of crack for about 4 years. Over the last six months it has gotten to be increasingly more…after just a few hours of not smoking I get physical sickness so, I use ‘cuz I’m afraid of what is going to happen. What do I do to stop and how long can the withdrawal last ?

  139. Hi Tamika. I know that you want to help your friend. The best thing to do is to get her professional help. Withdrawal is associated with VERY strong cravings. Rather than put your children through witnessing the potential difficulty, seek help by referring your friend to a detox clinic. Medical professionals will monitor her 24-7 and offer emotional support.

  140. I have a friend who is going through an extreme depression lately. Apparently on the 30th which was 2 days ago, the guy she was with drug her down with him and introduced her to crack. I’m unsure of how much she was smoking. It has been at least 12 hours since her last hit. I found out this morning and went and got her. I brought to my home where my children are. I want to help here but I don’t know where to begin or what I should do. Please give me some suggestions for getting my friend back on track. She is exhibiting some withdrawal symptoms and appears to be having cravings. I had hoped it was a joke but I can see that it is real. Please, please help us!

  141. Withdrawal duration and severity differ by person. Generally, the extreme fatigue should pass in the first week, or so after use. But cravings can linger for weeks or months. Have you sought medical help through a rehab center or outpatient clinic? Psychotherapy can help guide you AWAY from future crack use, and into a life of abstinence and contentedness.

  142. Hi, I’ve been smoking crack for about 6 weeks now. I use everyday smoking about .2 of a gram n lately on some days .4 of a gram. I stopped for a week about 2 n half weeks ago n started again. My question is how long will my withdrawal last approximately and how severe will the symptoms be?
