    1. Hi Colin. Heroine is highly addictive and quitting can be hard and dangerous. The decision to quit is always a good idea, but you must carefully plan it in order to avoid the unpleasant symptoms and relapse. You can try detoxing at home, but make sure you have someone around you. Also, if the withdrawal symptoms are unbearable, you should seek medical help. You can call the helpline on our site and our treatment consultants can help you make the right decision for you.

  1. If you do go the complete abstinence route, which is definitely not recommended, massive doses of vitamin C can help alleviate muscle cramps. Liposomal Vitamin C tablets or caplets are recommended in mega-dosing proportions. I’m talking 7 to 8 grams every couple of hours during the height of the withdrawal symptoms. You’ll still be sick as a dog, but those muscle cramps won’t be near as bad. You could use ascorbic acid (ascorbic acid is vitamin C) power mixed with water, but that can cause stomach upset in such large doses. The Liposomal caps don’t seem to cause that.

  2. Good morning I am wondering if I take a urine drug screen how do you tell the difference between taking Percocets or heroin what will the Percocets show up as in the difference of heroin show on the drug screen panel

  3. Hi, I have a friend who wants to quit and he has been injecting himself for about 6 months. I have offered to help after he told me he wants to stop and I will be there to monitor him. He doesn’t want to go to the doctor and be in rehab and wants to go off cold turkey. I have researched a lot and I have a few questions. Before that, I do have a bit of medical experience under my belt; I’m not claiming to be an expert hence my questions proceeding this. My first question is if I allow him to inject certain lower doses then proceed to stop completely and provide another substance (natural) that would increase his dopamine levels, would this be a more safe than going off completely all at once? My second question is what over-the-counter medications can I give him to help with the withdrawals and are there certain foods that I shouldn’t give him? I have Imodium, Robitussin, Benadryl, Advil, Antivert, and Magnesium supplements listed as things to give him when he is in need of them. Is it okay to mix some of these over-the-counter drugs together with the withdrawals? Also I do know that he needs a continuous amount of fluids and as far as that I have down dark green, leafy vegetables, proteins (both animal and plants), bright fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates and dairy as far as feeding him. Are there certain foods I should avoid or should definitely give him? He is allergic to seafood.

  4. i was really young and naive when introduced to heroin in 2006. i didnt drink or smoke i drink as depressed as tried to quit but its so hard and i am in debt from borrowing money to fund my family and friends dont know.i started snorting in 2006.little at a time. i was always just told to stay away, they are bad..not any info about them.i grew up in the caribbean.had no tv or internet or comouter dor most part to learn about the effect.the people who gave it to me, bullied me while i rented with them as ended up alone in london.after awhile i saw i couldnt stop and the dosage got higher.i tried several times to quit, but i just end back on after 3 days..i even rang frank.went to a drug place to get help, butthey took so long to rang back i got scared someone from my family or friends might find out.its my greatest shame.i work and i do charity work but i cry every night for hours on end.i feel so ashamed i dont want my gp to know.once after trying to quit, half my face froze..even my eyes couldnt close for fe0w weeks..the hospital first thought i was having a stroke, then they put it down to bell palsy..the right side of my face still has some nerves frozen as my smile is lopsided now and they right eyes goes really small when i i dont smile or laugh much anymore..i dream about killing myself if i cant stop..i think about it..this week i want to tey cold turkey again as dont know how else to stop without letting people know eg gp..i am scared i might have stroke or something.i snort a big line about 4 times a line cost £10..please help me or tell me how to stop or get help to stop without letting gp or people know..i feel so incredible ashamed..its the only bad thing i do..i still dont smoke..but my drinking has increase because so feel so depressed about tge debts i now have after never owing anyone money or the last 3 years i have just gotten into debt..please i am desperate to stop..i wish i knew what the effects and everything about heroin before i took it..they told me it was something that makes yoi feel first i felt i was going to puke my inside out when i first rook it, tgen i slept after..which was great on one hand as i suffer extreme insomnia, but when i slept the housemates Rob me..and on one occasion i was sure i was sexually assaulted..i just try to block it out..i now after researching is getting scared..i dont want to end up like young women you see on street doing bad things to afford this or end up being me please

  6. My husband and I have used off and on for the past several years. Starting Monday after using for over a year every day we have decided to go off heroin cold turkey. We have done it before and yes everyone withdrawals differently. We both are successful and have careers but from experience if you can get time off of work that is recommended. My symptoms are all of it except the vomiting thank god, but my husband experiences it much worse. He was in a severe accident so he already has pain and adding withdrawal to it is extreme. The first week is the hardest but we have each other for support and we both know when it is over we will be back to normal. There is no chance of relapse for either of us because we have been trying to have a baby and have spent thousands on this drug it’s just not possible anymore. The worst part of it for me is the emotional effects and insomnia. Keep hydrated and smoke cannabis if possible to help sleep. He uses Suboxone to wean off but it doesn’t help with his restlessness or insomnia. I cannot use it because it makes me even more sick. We are strong and that’s the mindset you have to have we come from a small town so medical treatment is not an option. The drug is expensive and not worth the shitty withdrawal symptoms but even though the high is good you will get sick with prolonged use. For some seeking rehab or advice is best but going cold turkey is hard and the worst thing I’ve ever experienced but it’s possible without other drugs. I’ve heard passionflower works great and water. I am on day 2 and am still going to work sick, we got this.

  7. My kids dad has been on herion for probably around 5 years. We separated due to this. He has tried rehabs, hospitals, methadone and other detox options. He came to me for help. He is now on day 3 weighs maybe 100 lbs. Every time he tries to eat he throws up. I have gotten him Tyanol, anti diaherra, lotion. Anything I can think of to help him through this. I have been keeping him dehydrated also. Will he get any better or will it get worse. He won’t go to a doctor nor anywhere else. I feel as if his life is in my hands. He doesn’t have a car and someone is around him 24/7 so he won’t be getting any more drugs. Is there anything else I can do to help him detox? If it fails I don’t want to feel like it’s my fault but I’m also not gonna turn him away begging fo4 help. Help me please.

  8. Tonight im going to be supporting 1 of my good friends quit cold turkey from a little over a year addiction on heroin. Please tell me what I need to do to keep her as comfortable as possible. Is there anything over the counter for us to use to ease the pain. She’s worried about restless leg syndrome.

  9. If I have been clean 7 days with the use of suboxone once daily
And I use heroin 1 time on The 7th day will it send me back to day one of withdrawals?

  10. My girl just went on a med from the door it was to stop her for wanting more but she had such a withdrawal today her whole body hurt she is finally sleeping should I worry

  11. Well I can say only by experience, this is my second time quitting cold turkey off Heroin. First time over 4 years ago me and my ex wife did it together over a move 33 hours away from where we started it. It was hard but I really can’t say I remember it the same way as this time around being as bad. We were on it maybe a year only snoring it. This time I moved back home went back to a old job and fell back in to my old ways. After being over 4 years clean I relapsed like a damn dummy. This time I did it maybe 6 months again only by snoring, I’m on day 6 and I’m still very sleepy lazy no energy. But by day 3 my pain was gone. Which I cried screamed begged my best friend to just knock me out. I have no cravings but I just pray to have just a lil bit of energy soon. I have not really eaten or drink anything but it’s getting better. Good luck to anyone who what’s to do it cause it can be done. It’s better then going from one addition to another that’s even harder to get off of.

  12. I have used herion for 28 years I’am 43 I started my rattle on the 3/10/17 I experienced hell on day 5 I ended up in a&e with clinical dehydration but I just want to give the message to people you can do it I haven’t touched a drug since then yes it was hard but it was worth it I’am back riding my horse and doing the things I love a week of hell is worth it for the quality of life you will have I was existing not living my life had become unmanageable please don’t give up hope if you want to do it you will find it somewhere in your soul to do it over those 5 worst days I begged The Lord a million times to die the pain was so bad but now I thank The Lord I did it you deserve this you can do it I’am proof of that

  13. My friend is using herion and went away for a month did good but when came home started again gonna stay with me and detox at home how can I help

  14. So grateful to be sitting here, on day 9 off the dope.
I checked into my local detox, and it made the world of difference. I personally can’t do it at home. I start freaking out. As soon as I get to detox…a calm comes over me. It’s a safe place.
I can laugh again, not be a slave to anything, I have hope again.
There will be rough days, but you are worth it.

  15. I was using heroin / opiates for over 2 years, I quit cold turkey just about 2 weeks ago and I feel amazing. Don’t listen to what this blog is telling you cold turkey is hard but by far the best way if you’re determined enough. Make sure you have a comfortable place to stay and plenty of fluids. It was hell for about 5 days but now I feel great it’s crazy you almost forget what it’s like to feel normal.

    1. Hi Bob. Congratulations on your sobriety! I’m really glad that you made it. Keep in mind that each person is different and reacts differently to heroin’s effects. Because of this fact, withdrawal and treatment for heroin addiction varies from person to person.

  16. hey, I have been using multiple drugs, heroin, weed, meth, cocaine and anything I could get my hands on for the last 14 months. Just lost my job and internship. I am sitting with study debt and tried committing suicide 5 weeks ago by OD on snorting heroin, alcohol and sleeping pills. did not work. when I woke up I decided to quit cold turkey, and life has been a bi*ch. I relapsed a week ago and my parents found out for I passed out in their bathroom with the needle still in my arm.
I lost everything, including a child. I don’t want to live this way anymore. no I don’t want to live anymore.
    please help

I can’t deal with this anymore please any advice on how to do it at home cold turkey. Feel like I’m gonna. Die no joke. I know they say you won’t die from it. But it sure feels like it. 21. I am currently 6 days into my cold turkey and still feels like the third day my will and determination is keeping me going, I goto be honest this is the hardest single thing I’ve had to do in my entire life and just the thought of having to go through this again is keeping me abstinent. It will work for some others will need support. You can do it people with love from a British recoveree

  22. I recently kicked a heroin habit. I used for about 12 years. Detox was hard but if your mind is in the right place it’s not impossible. The total freedom from any controlled substance makes it worth it. From experience tapering kinda works but no matter what in order to get off heroin you are going to have some tough days. I was achy, restless, and no sleep and more for about the first week and after that I was really weak and cold. Really freaking cold all the time but today I feel like super woman. I couldn’t even imagine doing the stuff I do today with nothing in me. I’ve been clean since December 10 2016

    1. Hi Anita. Thank you for your input. I am certain that it will be valuable for other readers seeking answers in this comment section.

    1. Hi Lanette. Heroin can be detected in urine for 1-2 days. However, heroin will show up in the urine for longer periods if taken in higher amounts, or if someone is a habitual heroin abuser. Sometimes heroin can linger in the body longer depending on factors like weight or body mass. If you want to learn more about drug testing and the detection periods for certain substances, I suggest that you download our free e-book ‘The Definitive Guide To Drug Testing’, here:

  31. I quit this shit cold turkey. Fuck liquid handcuffs, fuck sugar coating and watering down. The worst pain in your life, if you’re female, is child birth. I was using shit that was 8 times stronger than dope. When my dealer was missing, and I couldn’t get that pink, heroin wouldn’t even touch me. That’s when I realized my chase would be virtually impossible. That day I decided to just fucking quit. Adult diapers later, Pedialyte, trash bags full of vomit was how I lived for 4 days. I’d trade 4 days any time for a life time of not having to chase and pay for this fucked up addiction. I chose life. Fuck weaning, methadone, subs. Eventually you’re gonna get sick. Nip it in the bud

    1. Hi Paul. Common medications used to treat the side effects of heroin detox include buprenorphine, Clonidine, and methadone. But, you need to see a doctor first and enter an addiction treatment facility to be prescribed and treated. Also, there is a lot you can find at your local pharmacy or health foods store to stock your home to support signs of heroin withdrawal, including hot baths, muscle massage with oils or cremes, NSAIDs (non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs), Imodium AD and/or flu medicines.

Additionally, a psychiatrist can also work with you to address depression and are in the practice of prescribing antidepressant(s) to treat underlying mental health issues. Behavioral therapy can further address drug cravings and help teach ways to avoid relapse through cognitive awareness.

  42. My boyfriend and I are addicted to heroin. I’ve been using about a year and he’s been longer. We don’t shoot it, we snort it…about a half of a gram apiece. We want to quit so badly, but keep getting weak. The last few days have been bad…I just got my last paycheck because I lost my job over my addiction and were at rock bottom. I only had a few hundred left and yesterday he took my debit card and car while I was asleep and took $100 for drugs without asking me…he’s done this before. I was so mad, but also took tge drugs too because i didnt want to be sick. I felt disrespected and devastated. We fought all day and I cried all night. Today, he did it again. I’m even more hurt. I’m almost completely broke and did not even have a say in if I even wanted the drugs or not. I’m so confused. I want to quit and he swears he’s quitting this week and I want to too…I don’t know what to think of him st along from me…is it the drugs taking him over? Does he just not respect me? Can we get clean together? We’re in a vicious cycle and were at rock bottom. I love him. I want to be clean and happy. I’m laying in a closet, listening to depressing music…and I’m just so lost. I don’t know if I can do this.
Can two addicts quit together? Cold turkey? And stay clean together?

    1. Hello Stephanie. It will take a while, but you will be feeling physically much better with each passing day. I’d suggest you join a support group or group counseling treatment in your area to help you deal with the upcoming cravings and triggers that will compel you to start using again. This is only normal, but you will need the additional motivation and support to ensure your success in recovery. Good luck!

    1. Hi Sara. Yes, you can detox at home, but just make sure you have someone around you for support or in case you need anything. I don’t believe that it would come to it, but be ready to go to the hospital if symptoms get too harsh. After detoxing, I suggest you seek psychological help or start going to some therapy sessions, since there will be some psychological triggers and cravings you need to know how to deal with, in order to avoid relapse. And, good luck with becoming pregnant and being a new momma.

  49. Im on my 5th of detox from heroin. I have been using for 3 years. Im expiercing severe chest pains my heart is racingI havent slept at all and Iim duzzy while im laying down. Shoukd I go to the hospital?

    1. Hello Rachel. Yes, I’d agree that seeing a doctor is a good idea. You may get a referral to a detox clinic in your area, and may get a prescription for a maintenance treatment. Although the initial withdrawal symptoms will be over soon, there are protracted withdrawal effects that can persist for much longer. I’d suggest getting psychological help, group-based therapy, or counseling. Good luck to you, Rachel! Stay strong, you can make it!

  50. Hello Eloise. We’ve heard that long, hot baths and showers help with the chills; also those cold/hot gels for muscles may be helpful.

  51. I been on heroin for about eight mos. I only snort about 4 bags a day just enough to stop the sickness i really want to quit but wen i go with out the chills are soooo bad i sweat like a pig but im freezing im scared to get help bc i dont want them to put me in rehab i want to quit at home i have a very strong will power n i kno i can do it do u have any home remedies that will help with the chills

  52. Hello Lisa. Tapering down doses with the help of a physician will help first. Call a doctor or pharmacist if you resist face-to-face meetings. Additionally, Klonipine (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine sometimes prescribed during opiate withdrawal to ease symptoms. Buprenorphine can also help, but is often prescribed as long term therapy (like methadone). Why do you resist seeking medical help? If you can get over this barrier, there is much help and treatment you can benefit from.

  53. i have only been doing heroin for 6 weeks but other opiates for about 10 years. how bad will my heroin withdrawal be? how long? what can i do without seeing a dr or getting on methadone to ease withdrawal systems? what about marijuana?
    any help would be appreciated.
